Rick Riordan

I once mentioned Rick Riordan on a previous post :) In that post I shared that I was finishing Percy Jackson series. Now I'm gonna somewhat review his other series. He just came up with two other series, one named The Kane Chronicles and the other Heroes of Olympus.

Let's start with The Kane Chronicles, shall we? The first book is called The Red Pyramid.
Riordan has done it again, another bestseller based on a mythology. This time it's kinda more exotic (just my description :P) cuz it's based on Egyptian Myths. It was firstly published on May 4th, 2010. And the website said the second book is gonna be out in Spring 2011, and the third in 2012.

In this book the main characters are two siblings named Carter and Sadie Kane. The chapters are divided in their different point of views. Sometimes it's Carter who's telling the story, and sometimes it's Sadie. They have different personalities so it's fun to see their different ways of story-telling. In this story, their mother had passed away and Carter followed his dad all around the world for his job as an Egyptian Archaeologist, while Sadie had to stay with their grandparents in England. The adventure started when their Dad disappeared after summoning Osiris (God of the Underworld, like Hades in Greek I guess) , which accidentally let not only Osiris, but also four other children of Geb and Nut to be released. One of them, Set, the God of chaos, wants to reign and caused (guess what) chaos in the present time.

Now it's up to Sadie and Carter to make things right. Although all this time they didn't even know how their Dad is capable of magic, and how they're part of an ancient Egyptian family. They had to learn lots of facts and abilities quickly to survive not only Set, but also the House of Life, which consisted all the magicians who considered both of them dangerous as they can be possessed by the Gods. In the end, it wasn't only about beating Set, it's about relationship between the House of Life and the Gods, the Kane family relationship, and trusting friends they met along the way.

It's a very fun book! The same excitement as when I read Percy Jackson for the first time. It made you want to learn about Egyptian myths and their Gods (Hello, Wikipedia...) and the stories behind them. I think Rick Riordan knew that the formula he used for Percy could be used for another set of series :P And I'm glad he did, it's very interesting and I think it could educate children as well in terms of history.

The other one is Heroes of Olympus series, the first book is called The Lost Hero.
To be honest I haven't finished this book, I'm only halfway through it. So far it's also as interesting as the other Riordan's. It was firstly published on October 12, 2010. The website so far listed four more books, which is going to be released in fall yearly until 2014. And unlike, The Kane Chronicles, the second book title is already known, which is The Son of Neptune.

In The Lost Hero our main characters consisted of three teenagers, Jason, Piper and Leo. It was all started in some kind of delinquent camp, which Jason found himself simply being there without any memory of how he got there. Then the three of them got picked up to join Camp Half-Blood, which is missing their Percy Jackson. See, it's somewhat a spin-off of Percy Jackson.

So in the camp Leo and Piper were claimed by their Olympus parent. And out of a new great prophecy, they have to go on a quest to free Hera, who apparently had stolen Jason's memory.

I haven't finished this one so I can't write much about it. So far the "new" thing I found is there are two forms of the Gods, which is their Greek and Roman form. They have slightly different personalities, as Hera or as Juno, for example. And in this book, of course, some new Gods who hadn't appear in Percy Jackson made their way to the story. I wonder how many Gods there in the Olympus, must be kinda crowded ha ha.

I would write more once I've finished the book. But the point is, Riordan has made it to my permanent list! :D With Kinsella and Albom, I'm gonna search whenever he released a new book ahahaa... I guess that's it for now, gonna turn my attention to Lost Hero for the time being :*
